Folks tend to use 2 x 4's for roosting - wide side up. Chickens like to have their feet flat in front of them and lay their head on top to keep them warm.

Though chickens do not curls their toes like birds, I have always used round roosts for my chickens. But then I have always lived in the country and could cut sprouts for roosts. I think chickens are a bit insecure on flat boards.
