I help care for a good friend's 9 chickens. I would say I provide 60-70% of their care. We've had them for about a little over a year now. He and his family were new to owning chickens when they bought them last year. I am not sure of the breeds. Two light tan with floppy red combs, two red with floppy red combs, one black and white zig-zag striped with a floppy red comb, one black and white that has more defined feathers and a short red comb. They are all a little over a year old. Then there are 3 newcomers. One is a tan/brown with black specks and long hair on the side of its head with a short red comb, another is light tan with white specks (looks like the tan/brown one) and long hair on the side of its head with a short red comb, and a black one with a floppy red comb and all black eyes and grey legs and feet. She's my favorite looking one. The newcomers are mainly what drove me to joining this group. It has been challenging trying to integrate them and it has been going on for about a month and a half now.
My favorite aspect of caring for chickens is spending time with them and just watching them and learning from them. I love holding them and feeding them. I love collecting and eating their eggs and knowing they came from the backyard. Some of my other hobbies are kayaking, fishing, bow hunting, spending time in nature, hiking, woods walking, cooking. I do not currently have any pets of my own. I did own a rabbit who was almost 15 years old and he passed away two years ago. I haven't gotten another pet for financial and time reasons. That rabbit required a lot from me, and I loved every minute of it, but I can't invest that time in another being of my own right now. I found BYC by googling and I've known about you for about a year. I joined because I wanted to post and ask questions and get into all things chickens so I can help provide great care and ultimately become a responsible chicken owner myself one day. I want to be with my people who also love chickens
I really enjoy spending time with them.
