Hi! My husband and I are going to get some chicks for a backyard flock very soon! We have a baby daughter, and we would love for her to grow up with chickens. I am thinking of getting a RIR, Silver Laced Wyndotte and a Barred Plymouth Rock. We have regulations in our city that will only allow a small flock (and no roos!), but these seemed to be docile and friendly birds who will also be good layers - does that sound right?

I've really been enjoying exploring BYC and My Pet Chicken - I think that's where we'll go when it's time to order our babies. Any advice or tips before we get started?

Thanks!

there is a breed chart here. Also you can check on youtube i don't have the exact link but theres one with a guy who goes to different backyard flocks that has different breeds of chickens and the owners do like a review on calmness, demeaner and such.

Welcome from the Bay Area! What a darling little girl! Looks like a bright, happy baby.

Chickens make surprisingly good pets. They are enjoyable to watch and can be quite addicting. The breeds you mentioned sound great. I can vouch for the barred rocks being friendly and docile. Everyone has their favorites (mine are Easter Eggers) so check out the reviews in the breeds section to find the qualities you are looking for. (Maybe look at Buff Orpington and Black Australorp.)

Best wishes and happy chickens!

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll check YouTube. I had a Buff Orpington rooster years ago and he was a sweetheart. I've read many chicken breeds can be great pets when they're hand-raised, and that's what I'm planning to do, so hopefully that will work out!

Thank you for commenting on my daughter - she is a super happy baby! Her name is Evelyn, and I'm guessing she'll grow up to be quite the chicken fan. My husband is a veterinarian, so she's born to be an animal lover in general!

Thanks for the warm wishes! I'm so excited to get started.

from New Mexico!

The Orpington breeds make GREAT children's pets. This breed, (Buff Orps and the Black Australorps) tolerate the kids when they carry chickens around the yard and pull them in wagons. LOL My Australorps are really lap babies and beg to sit in my lap.

Good luck with your chicken adventures!
