My chicks/pullets are 10 weeks old now. Yesterday we introduced him to the pullets and he did great. He did his lovely tap dance to them (although they have no interest yet) and everyone was happy and together. Then about 5 hours later he pinned one of my Production Reds down like he was going to mate her. Scared her to death, she lost a few feathers on the back of her neck so I removed him. Is it too soon?

He did so well for so long, I was sad to see him try and mate her. I know he does not understand but I want to mesh them. He seems nervous when he can't see them and the only place I have to put him apart from them is out of their sight and then he seems nervous again. Yesterday for the first time he seemed like a totally different rooster, like his life was fulfilled. LOL He was calm and let me walk right up close to him.

Should I just keep trying? Wait a while?

I'll probably just have to butcher him then. I have no where to keep him separate for 2 more months.

Our teenage coop is being used by my 4-5wk olds who will be in it for a while (since the 10 week olds hate them) the large run the 10wk olds are in now is all I have.
