Now THAT would be awesome! Seriously though, set up a different area so the new guy can have a hen or three to himself. I think several roos are easier to handle/get along when they free range. But penned in another story.

NoSkiveez... the hens who now hang out with Nemo were from the batch of chicks we bought. Once they were large enough to be integrated with the flock, the hens divided themselves among several roosters, and Nemo acquired 3 henfriends. Our birds all free range on a large property. Nemo & Co. hang out near the sheep and lambing sheds, and his hens all lay their eggs back there. It's their own little Xanadu.

Thanks. I didnt want him on the ground with our others yet but didnt give much thought to him transmitting anything to our others any other way.

Hubby isnt thrilled that he has a new chick project all mapped out but thankfully he is willing.

As for my gender changing chicks...this has happened twice now. One was a chick that I got from a feed store (they only bought females) and he magically transformed. When he changed genders, he also changed colors too. It was neat. The other was about 4 months old. We called him our transgender hen. He had just watched a good number of roo's at his old home get slaughtered and thought he's have better odds if he was a hen. He ended up getting mean and needing a new home, I couldnt send him back knowing he'd go on a chopping block.
