We have 9 hens, mostly Golden Comets but a few Buff's and one Jersey Giant. Three of the comets are about 8 months, the rest of the hens are pushing 2 years old. They are 100% penned, we lost several birds to predators. So we have large run to protect the flock.
However, we are shifting to a different setup next month with a shed style coop and electrified poultry netting; with a few predator eyes for good measure. I want them to have greater access to forage. So we need to add a rooster so the flock has some protection. Our plan is to leave the existing flock in the current setup, sending them to freezer camp as they stop producing.
My neighbor has a 6.5mo old Jersey Giant he's looking to give away since he is his third rooster. My question is, would it be detrimental or advantageous to bring in the rooster now w/ the established flock, following a quarantine period. Or just wait until we bring in the new flock? We don't have any experience w/ roosters so I'm not sure if having to establish pecking order/dominance so close together would be problematic.
Thanks!
