Everyone says that a chicken can fight off a cat but I am not so sure about that. My male cat who spent a good portion of his life as a tomcat before I had him fixed will catch kill and eat anything smaller than him. My Female cat has always been afraid of birds.

The first morning that The Cat (that's what I named my male cat) was outside at the same time I first let my month old chickens into the run. He sprinted towards the run and climbed up on the coop ready to pounce so I ushered the birds inside until he went out on his daily prowl through the neighborhood. That night I figured it was a good time to introduce him to the birds to see if I can inform him that they are off limits. I took him into the coop at night with a grip on his tail so he knew he was in a submissive position. He now knows the chickens are my property and off limits. Can't say this will work with any cat but me and The Cat know each other well and communicate often about these things. The White Leghorns went right up to him with no fear at all, this was a shock. He is 10 times bigger than these month old chickens are and a very good hunter. Seen him catch rabbits bigger than him when he was somewhere between an adult and a kitten. The other breeds of chicken kept their distance but did not seem scared at all. 3 or 4 days later and The Cat is avoiding the chickens even as he is catching wild birds near the bird feeder. Hope this trend continues.

The Female hates the chickens and avoids the coop/run.
