Introducing chickens to new coop

My chicken coop is enclosed in a predator proof (including the roof) run. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough.

Is there still a need to close (or lock as you say) them INSIDE the coop at night? Or is it ok for them to choose where they sleep?

I lost our first batch of chickens to a raccoon reaching inside the run's wire fencing (I let the handyman use stucco wire) and pulling out the 6 week olds by their heads. I have since upgraded to 1/2 inch aviary wire, deep staples into the wood, and protection from diggers by using 14 inch wide pavers (10-14 pounds apiece) along the inside perimeter of the run.

I live in Campbell which is near San Jose in the south SF bay area.

So - Our new chicks should be ready to go into the coop in the next two weeks. I am very new to the chicken thing (but have to say the family is loving it).

When we put them in the coop for the first time we should put them in the hen house with food and water and lock them in for a day. The next day we should open the ramp door and see what they do around dusk. If they don't go in we should put them in?

Thanks for the help. Am a little nervous about the move from the house to the coop.
