Introducing chicks to chicks

We did it!!! All 5 are together in the run. The personality difference between the 2 older ones and the 3 younger ones is very distinct. The two older ones (I assume) don't appear to have been "humanized" before we got them and that is really apparent. Hopefully in time they will warm up to us.

We introduced two 1 1/2 month old chicks with our one 2 month old chick who recently lost her two sisters. At first the new babies were very iffy due to being in a new home. Now its been about 3 days that they have been together and they have adapted amazingly! I now call the oldest chick big momma because she has taken the younger chicks under her wing (no pun intended) I went from sitting up at 2:30 am with big momma, so she wouldn't cheep so loud or be alone, to watching the little ones follow her every move. I saw all three of them perched on their box this morning, most likely following big mommas example :) it just warms my heart to see them all together munching on the grass and cuddling when the wind picks up.

You gotta love it when babies bond so well :)

Oh one more thing, we introduced them immediately when we got home and they slept together that night. We have had no problems so far!

So today/tonight/this evening, I noticed that one of my older chickens "kitty" is laying down in the run with the little ones and the other older one named spazz, is chasing them but Kitty is being a protective momma. Their food dish was knocked off of the hook because it was getting low on feed which made it weigh much lighter. I crawled in the run to fill and fix the feeder. Guess that means I'm a good momma too. You all don't know me but for those who do know me they would never expect me to be a "farmer Dawn" as they call me now.

Life is good.

I have an EE hen that adopts all the chicks I put in the coop just like she hatched them herself. maybe Kitty will be like her. I wish you the best of luck with your chickens. And
