Thanks for reading this - am excited to be online here! Tried to answer all the ?s like a good girl.
New to *personally* owning chickens, I got to know more about them through a friend's group at our church years ago for folks wanting to raise backyard chickens. Was wonderful but he was bummed since none of us in the group were actually ready to start raising them at that time. We just wanted to be cool by association ;-)) And I was bummed too since I didn't have space to do anything. Fast fwd 5 years...
We got our 1st 3 hens in April 2020- and, as of yesterday our brood doubled in size! (We now have 6- but surely won't stop there....)
We were gifted 3 pullet white silkies from a neighbor due to their relative's illness (long story) - they are mid-molt and still quite cute.
This morning he confirmed we now have our 1st ever rooster -- yep, he's a silkie rooster!
Our 3 original hens are: California white hen who rules kindly- a Cinnamon queen beta- & a bantam toughgirl who is clearly her own boss.
Favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens-
Of course, the chickens themselves, but also the chicken people - it is almost an instant bond.
I'm making quick friends this way in a new area...
Other hobbies-
The great outdoors, music, agriculture, community service, faith...laughter & good people...
Other info-
Married. Am a former researcher (health science/MH) transplanted to the Piedmont region of the Carolinas. We LOVE it here.
Found BYC online via search engine & am now motivated to join since I truly want help & input raising these silkies. They are so sweet but clearly vulnerable with their light feathers and sweet ways...we have so many hawks and other predators here.
