Hi everyone! I've lurked in the forums for a while, but I'm finally pulling the trigger on getting ducks, so I figured I'd join.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm new to ducks, although I've raised animals before.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None yet, planning on one dozen ducks in the near future.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Looking to get Khaki Campbells for the eggs.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Honestly, besides the eggs, I'm looking forward to the pest management! We have a lot of bugs, especially ticks, in southeast Virginia, so I'm hoping the ducks help tamp down on those. Plus, duck poop will go nicely with my very large garden.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I have a big garden. I build a lot of outdoor things (including an 18 foot tall pirate ship for my kids). I build WiFi networks as a side job. I brew my own beer.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I've got 5 kids, ranging from newborn to 13. We live on 3.5 acres, right now no pets but we're getting bees this year as well.
Definitely interested in connecting with anyone living in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
I built my house from scratch, it was a pretty epic journey since EVERYTHING that could go wrong, did go wrong. I ended up writing a book about it, including an audiobook, if anyone is interested.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
My family first tried duck eggs when we were living in Connecticut. We loved them, so we wanted to get our own ducks someday. I've been doing a lot of research and slowly building out my homestead, and its now finally time to get ducks. This community always had good information, and since I dropped off most other social media, I figured I'd join like-minded people here.
