Been lurking on BYC forums for a year or so now in anticipation of beginning on the chicken keeping journey. With our move to rural Ireland now an actuality and imminent [mid-June!!], I feel it is time to become a bit more active. 3rd generation big city girl with zero "farming" experience here. My semi-retired self and my fully retired husband are making the big leap back to his home place in Co. Kerry to live out our 'golden years'. Husband was an Irish farm boy for his first 20 years but as he willingly acknowledges, "things have changed everywhere" so looking to the masters for ideas and advice as we build our flock from the ground up...literally, as there is no coop on the property!
Hoping to start with just a few heritage breed pullets [I've heard of chicken math LOL] like Light Sussex or Rhode Island Reds to 'train on' and eventually add some other breeds once I feel some semblance of competency. A rooster is still in the TBD department....eventually a for sure but might wait a year or so to get our chicken keeping skills up to snuff. Not pure homesteaders nor pet keepers and not ones to waste so expecting to face the Camp Freezer decision eventually as well but hoping it is a few years down the road!
Quite excited so any pessimists looking to wake me up...can you wait a few months before bursting my bubble?? Thank you!
