Hi all,
I'm new here. Been lurking for about a month and just created an account so I can jump in and ask questions and comment.
A bit about myself:
I'm new to chicken keeping. My kids have wanted chickens for years and I was always the nay sayer, but for some reason I started looking into and am now on board 110%, hubby is out building a coop as I type this, we plan on picking up day old chicks on March 1st. Planning on 6 of them, already checked w/ our town and we are ok. I need to get the liter for the brooder box, thinking puppy pads for the first week or two, and need the holders for food and water as well as the heat bulb (have the lamp part just not the actual bulb), and hubby has a temp control thermostate to help regulate the temp for the first several weeks. Plan on keeping them in the basement until the outside temp reaches 60 degrees or they're fully feathered (8 weeks). We live on the coast in MA so will probably have to wait till they're 8 wks old. I can't remember when we are consistently above 60 degrees but it seems like it takes quite awhile. We can still get snow in early April.
Reason for chickens are the eggs and as pets, pals around the house. I've heard how chickens are quite sassy and have personalities. Loving all the stories and how sweetly owners talk about there feathered friends. Planning on getting 6 chicks, thinking of Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks and Easter Eggers. I have 2 teenage girls, 1 dog, 1 cat and 1 amazing husband. Although I do feel badly for the dear husband sometimes. Our pets are females, our children are females, and we're about to bring 6 hens into the equation, talk about being hen pecked, poor guy! He needs some testosterone in the house but no roosters are allowed per our town ordinance. Maybe one day we'll get him that male Bull Mastiff that he'd love, or a male Labrador.
Think I'm just rambling so I'll stop now. Nice to meet you all and thanks for letting me join,
Elissa

Hi Elissa and welcome to BYC. I wish you the best of luck with your chicken plans.
