Hi there, I’m Budge! I’ve known about BYC for almost a year now and occasionally read the forums, but I’ve finally decided to join the community for myself! So what is there to know about me and my flock?
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’ve had chickens since May or June of 2017. I suppose that means I’m still learning, but not exactly new.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 3 hens. My town only allows 4 chickens per household, and my fourth passed away last winter. I might bring home a new hen this spring.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have a Rhode Island Red, a Barred Rock, and an EE.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love going out to the garden to let my girls run around while I water the vegetables. They’re great at turning the soil and eating grubs and other things I don’t want in my yard. Backyard chickens are also very therapeutic after a long day. I like to go out to the coop and listen to podcasts with a chicken in my lap and a book in hand.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Aside from chickens, I enjoy reading and browsing the internet. A lot of my free time goes to practicing my instruments and homework. I also have a few other birds that I enjoy spending time with!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have large family. My mom and dad are the ones who allowed me to get chickens in the first place. They take care of the girls when I have to leave at times. I have a twin brother who does not appreciate having so many animals around, but he tolerated them for my sake. I have two dogs, a 10 year old boxer, and a 13 year old boxer-Boston terrier mix. I have two budgies named Beatrice and Saké. Lastly, I have a blue and gold macaw. She came as a rescue from a hospice patient, but I’m her forever home now!
