Hi Y'all!

New chick here!

My family and I just got our first biddies... but we started small... literally! We have 4 adorable little button quails as of 2 weeks ago. They were smaller than ping-pong balls! Sooooo cute. 9-year daughter promptly named them "Tiny" (the smallest, but the most inquisitive), Speedy (very hard to catch), Sunny (yellow), and Cocoa (brown speckled.)

We are in the Silver Springs Shores area of Ocala, Florida. I had a few pet chickens when I was a kid, as has my hubby, but neither of us has experience with quail.

We will be building a small outdoor quail run and box for them soon. They aren't quite feathered out yet, so I was advised to keep them indoors for a bit longer until they all get all their feathers.

I have already fallen in love with them! I am looking forward to getting good advice from the folks here, as I have read lots and lots of conflicting information about pairing, tame vs. not tame, edible eggs vs. nevermind eating them (hubby is Asian, and we both grew up eating quail eggs in the noodle dishes and soups.), etc.

My personal background is this:

I am a biologist and professional naturalist/environmental educator, currently working as a science teacher in a science education center. I grew up in the Philippines, and went to Silliman University, graduating in 1993. My post-grad internship was with the Philippine Eagle Foundation in Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines.

So.... here I am!

Welcome to BYC!

Button quail are generally indoor quail and can't tolerate temps below 60 degrees. So as long as your temps are mild enough, and I see you are from Florida, they will enjoy their outdoor time! Make sure to give them plenty of space as Buttons are normally kept in pairs only and will fight with others.

You might want to stop by our quail section for more help if you need answers for things...

Enjoy your cute Buttons and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC. I've been getting quite the education learning about guineas - we have had several newbies with guineas. Hope I can remember what I've learned about them.
