Good morning. I had fowl pox run through my flock a few months ago. Everyone is over it and I have 11 new babies that I will eventually want to introduce to the flock. I found that feeding my birds tumeric helped them to quickly recover. I have the new babies on tumeric to boost their immune system and plan to keep them separate until they are 3 months old. I sanitized the coop and nesting boxes. Are there any other suggestions when introducing them to the flock?

As long as there's no active cases, and no more mosquitoes you should be okay. Pox is spread by mosquitoes, and direct contact with the lesions.

I know that you can vaccinate for fowl pox, but would you recommend it? Some of my birds who had it this year were previously vaccinated by the breeder. I am assuming it was a different strain than what the vaccine covered.

From my understanding once birds have it they are immune. I don't if there are different strains, I can tag @Eggcessive and see if they have more information than me.

I only saw it in my turkeys a few years back. It never spread to my chickens, and I haven't seen it since. I do make sure to dump standing water often so the mosquitoes can't get established as much.

There only seems to be one or two fowl pox vaccines available from online stores. The literature says that birds who have pox will be immune to that particular strain of pox, but I don’t know if the vaccine protects against different strains.

When it comes to vaccination for pox, I would use it if I lived in the deep south such as TX, LA, FL and other tropical or hot areaz. Here in the OH valley, we really don’t see pox. I think I have seen exactly 2 scabs on a single chicken.
