I have one Buff Orpington hen (about 8 months old). I recently got two new chicks (Welsummer and Plymouth Rock.) They are now about 6 weeks old. So far they have been living inside the house in a box, although I take them outside onto the deck almost every afternoon. When they are on the deck, the hen and the chicks can see each other. Is it too early to let them wander around the yard together? I have only let them mingle twice for just a couple minutes. The hen seemed very nervous and pecked at them a bit. Would she hurt them?

Thank you for any advice! I would love to get the new ones outside/in the coop as soon as possible but want them to be safe!

She is able if inclined. Sounds like your doing it right. Keep giving them a little more time together each visit and just keep an eye on them. She will probably peck at first but should get used to them quickly. Again..If she is inclined. Good Luck
