To start with, i am in New Zealand.

At this stage i am looking for info, as won't be ready to start this project for a fair while yet. My first lot of pullets haven't started laying yet.

I have bantam ameraucanas, two display the muff and beard, the others don't, so i'm thinking easter eggers there. There are far less options here than in the states, due to limited range of breeds, colours and breeders, i haven't found many. I did come across a breeder a couple of hours away from me with gorgeous duckwings, though they are full size.

So, i'd love to get this color into my bantams, as there is almost no standard colored bantams here, they are all just splashes, mixed colors, or blacks

Now, how should i go about this? What is the process for introducing a new color in? Major dos and don't? Any other info?

All help and info is appreciated :)

The splash, blue and black gene are all related. splash is dominate, blue is heterozygous, and black is recessive. You can add in other patterns (like birchen) and have the three colours play around.

For a start, just the basic standard colors. Here in new zealand, i have just found out there is no official standard for bantam ameraucanas, and so because of this, there has been no regulation of breeding standards for the wee guys.Every one i have come across is a mish mash of colors. I'm going to aim to get the type and confirmation more correct, then look at starting to get standard colours in, and in the really long term, maybe some other colors, as in nz we are not so strict with the acceptable colors.

I hope this makes sense :) I know it did in my head, but it may waffle on a little.

then breed for conformation and type first, then worry about colors

When i first posted this, i did not realise there was no standard for the bantams here, i also did not realise i would have to do a lot of the ground work the bantam version.

However, i do like to plan far ahead, so if anyone would be willing to share any information i could suck up, i would still appreciate it, I may not use it for a while, or even a few years, but i'd still love to know. I'm for learning all things chicken i can :)
