Introducing The Goons

So, it’s been a little bit since I posted as the last post I made was about my lovely Pekin, Margery, who sadly passed away after a brief illness. Daphne, her partner in crime, was understandably very upset, especially as this made her an only duck.

We decided that we would add to the flock once we made sure that Daphne was ok. I gave my hubby resources as he had a few days off. Lots of ads for lovely ducks of all sorts of breeds. We were going for adults, and definitely females. Or so I thought.

One day last week, my husband brought these two home. Muscovy ducklings born in May of unknown sexes (I think the darker one is female and lighter one might be a Drake, but this is an unscientific guess). He had pretty names picked out for both, but it quickly became clear that they are little demon ducklings. The yellow one bites with enthusiasm. When allowed (we know better now), they chased Daphne. They are full of mayhem and spice.

And yet, I’m falling for them. They are starting to settle, and we are slowly integrating them with Daphne, who is happy to no longer be alone.

Thank you. Although the Goons hang out together and Daphne does her own thing most of the time, it is a huge relief to see a decrease in Daphne’s overall stress level (despite the occasional brief chase). Her “distress quacks” after Margie died were heartbreaking. The Goons still have their own pen and only have supervised time with Daphne, although they may be fully integrated by the end of the weekend.

Daphne seemed particularly happy this evening and enjoyed a supervised “free range” romp through the tall grass.

The Goons weren’t tooooo terribly difficult to put to bed tonight. I will try and get more pictures this weekend as their feathers are coming in so quickly that they look different each morning!

As requested! Daphne is getting more comfortable with the Goons, although she still appreciates a break every now and then!

I love the white one’s yellow cap. Both Goons have grown a lot of new feathers over the past week! Neither had access to a pool or pond prior to us getting them, so they had to learn to swim quickly. The black/white Goon flipped herself over a couple of times in the beginning, but they are both pros now!
