Hello,

My name is Lindsay. I live in Ne and have 4 children and 22 chickens. Three days ago my fiance and I went out to do chicken chores and noticed one chicken in the snow not moving. I went over and picked the chicken up and it looked like it had been beat up. Bleeding from her beak, eyes shut and not able to stand, combs and area around their eyes are purple. Whites of their eyes were red. Two hours later I found another one. Today I found one more. The sickest one I found was the first one. I have kept them segregated and they are doing better, but still not able to walk. However, now I am concerned this could be the bird flu. They are in our shop so they could be exposing my whole family. I just need answers.

Welcome to BYC. Spend some time with your chickens to see if one is bullying them. Do you have one or more roosters? A rooster could damage an hen that does not want to mate, and occasionally a rooster could be bullying. Some hens may gang up on more meek birds. What breeds are they? Are any showing any signs of having trouble walking or acting lethargic or puffed up? Could a dog or other predator have hurt them?

Could you post any pictures of sick birds? There are many symptoms of AI, but hopefully this is not what you are dealing with. https://extension.umn.edu/poultry-health/avian-influenza-basics-noncommercial-poultry-flock-owners

On Monday you could call your state vet in Lincoln for any information, or if you need to have testing or a necropsy done on a chicken. Here is a list of state vets to contact including NE:
