Protect your chickens from the fox
How can you protect chickens and other small livestock from the fox or stone marten?
Make sure they don't get to the chickens, ducks or rabbits - especially at night. Usually it is sufficient to ensure a good night loft that is closed at night (whether or not automatically). Do you want your small livestock to be completely safe? Then provide a fence based on the principles depicted here.
Safe chicken coop - fox
Stretch a sturdy iron mesh on the outside of the posts - 1.45 mm thick - mesh size max. 3 x 3 cm
Make your fence at least 180 cm high so that the fox cannot jump over it.
Fold the top 40 cm outwards at an angle of 30 °
Equipped with two electric wires on the outside: at the bottom at 20 cm height and at the top at 160 cm or
Span the entire run with a sturdy net or (even better) with the same mesh as the fence
On the outside of the run, lay a row of heavy tiles at least 40 cm wide so that the fox cannot dig under the wire or
Dig the mesh 50 cm deep at an angle of 45 ° outwards or straight into the ground.
Other tips
Illuminate the part where your chickens are staying
Keep a dog in your yard (fox is very afraid of dogs)
If you do not want a pen or run, you can also leave your animals completely free so that they have more flight options.
Can you dig a trench under your gate? I'm building an outdoor enclosure for my daughter's Russian tortoise for the summer. They have to be dig proof to prevent escape. I looked into something called Dig Defence, but it's expensive. After walking through a big box store, I decided to use vinyl coated wire shelving like this: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Rubbermaid-TightMesh-12-ft-x-20-in-White-Universal-Wire-Shelf/3066311
Dig the trench, level the ground under the gate, drop in shelf and backfill with dirt. Maybe put some patio pavers on top as well.
Welcome to BYC! Fox couldn’t dig into my chicken yard but did jump over the 4’ gate. Keep that in mind too. I have taller fencing now plus 2 strands of hot wire at top and bottom.
