I think your plan is a good one. There are multiple good designs that would fit your needs on this site. I think BO's would be great to start with. If MS wasn't such a long state and you are probably 8 hrs away from me, I would bring you a few to get started with this spring. But, that's the way life goes. Enjoy your chickens. And go ahead and get a silkie, there is no sense it fighting it, it will eventually get you anyway.
