Hi! I'm a new member, but I've been referring to BackYard Chickens for over a year. This site has been very helpful, both in finding information about the different breeds and how to take care of them. I am posting here to let everyone know that because of the information I've received, I have had phenomenal success with my small flock. I purchased 1 brown Leghorn rooster, 6 brown Leghorn hens, and 6 Rhode Island Red hens last April. (2013). I did lose one Leghorn hen when I moved them to their coop, but the rest are thriving and well. I live in Minnesota where the last week we have had sub zero temperatures for many days. I have collected 5-10 eggs per day from my hens. The average is 8-9. Their coop is heated with 1 250 watt heat lamp. It is insulated, but there are many cracks around the doors. We chose our birds based on their ability to withstand cold weather and I am very happy with them. We found that having fresh water, which we supply with a heated pet food bowl and fill every day, is one of the keys to success.
