I am new to ducks, but not to farm life. We got our first three about two weeks ago. We are not positive but believe they are runners.
Besides being adorable, I love their clumsiness and curiosity. I love fresh eggs, but can't eat chicken eggs. I have no issues with duck eggs, though. Duck eggs are great for baking, too! Probably our biggest motivation for getting ducklings is our six year-old son who seems to have inherited my love of all creatures. He's smitten with our three!
We have two boys (18 and 6). The oldest is off to college in the fall
We live in the mountains and have some acreage, about half is grass and the other half is forested. We have an Australian Shepherd and a Newfoundland. I haven't lived on a farm in about 10 years, but am missing it.
We found you on a Google search a few weeks ago - randomly searching about how to figure out the color and gender of our ducklings. I've given up for now and actually don't particularly care about the color. We'll figure out what to do with males, if it's an issue. A good ratio of female to male is 5-1? Is that about right?
Thanks for letting me join! Looking forward learning more. Feel free to send me tips, thoughts, ideas . . . when is it best to get an additional three? LOL
