Hello fellow poultry owners! I have recently acquired two chicks and am really enjoying them. So, I am an urban backyard chicken owner trying to get the latest info on raising and spoiling them properly. As I promised my son, these are pets and will never be for dinner. We hope to enjoy their eggs and help with a more productive garden. They are ready to go outside but we have yet to build their coop. I am still going through several designs and narrowing down to one that meets my requirements and city code. In the meantime the chicks claim the house as theirs. They even knock on the sliding glass door when they are ready to go inside after free ranging in the backyard with our German shepherd, Niko, chick sitting.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family had at one point over 20 bantam chickens when I was a child. I told my son this and for Easter this year he asked the Easter Bunny and me for chicks. He was" Mom, wouldn't you like to have chickens again?" I got a pair the day before Easter on March 30th.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Just the two new ones.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Sally is an obvious looking Barred Rock and I think Amelia is a Sex-Linked Comet. Please comment if you think you know what breed she is. I believe they are both pullets. I hope so as I adore them both but cannot have any roosters due to city code.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? It has been many years since raising chickens so I Googled and found this forum.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I like technology, gardening, camping, robotics, green living, reading, watching cute animal videos on YouTube and entertaining my son.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am currently working only part time from home. I have a German Shepherd that is getting used to his new responsibility. My 7 year old son and I are big animal lovers and my husband is not. We have been slowing winning him over. I would live on a farm with a lot of animals if I could convince my husband. I grew up in the city but with a lot of typical pets..bunnies, chickens, mice, turtles, guinea pigs, ducks, dogs and fish. I would love to expand that experience to having farm animals.

This is my first time trying to raise chickens I have mostly silkies and I think not sure on the other two. I work in preschool and decided to bring home the chicks that hatched in our room. Looking forward to the fun.
