Introduction - The Silkie Lab (Danielle)

It does not mean that they are mutts/mixes :) The gene that causes the extra toes in silkies presents in many ways, and when breeding silkies you will always end up with some that don't have the right amount of toes or spacing. Regarding the color, paint is known to have pigment issues at hatch. Usually the skin will darken as they get older :)

Very pretty! I'm guessing that's a pullet yet the next couple of weeks should be definitive.

I've been raising silkies for over eight years, and when we started, ours were donated to us. I learned later that those although pure silkies, were what we call "pet quality" or "hatchery quality." I've since stopped hatching their eggs, purchased show-quality chicks, and ordered hatching eggs from exhibition breeders.

It's all what you want for chickens. The ones you have are beautiful, no matter if they aren't considered high-quality or are mixes, so if they're missing a toe, don't have a beard or vaulted skull, have pink skin, etc., it may not matter. They are still a sweet and beautiful bird.

I have a few paints and they started out with white beaks and mottled feet. They are a few months old now, and the white almost has changed to black.

Hi everyone!

My name is Danielle and I am a Silkie Breeder and I own The Silkie Lab.

I'm in Michigan, and I created my own little business for DNA Testing Chickens, Geese, etc. I am only a few years into breeding silkies, so I wouldn't consider myself a full-blown breeder yet, but I'm working on Lavender, Lavender Laced, and Porcelain (Mille x Lavender).

I wanted to join here to not only discuss chickens and breeding, but also, my business. At The Silkie Lab, I do DNA Sex Testing on many species, along with Antigen testing for Mareks and ALV, and I test for the Lavender Gene. Within a month or so, I will also be releasing testing for the Blue Egg Gene, and the Recessive White Gene. I really enjoy studying genetics, and working in my lab, and looking out the window and seeing my Silkies :).

Am interested in purchasing some quality bearded silkie girls. Looking for buff and white or splash. I do live in SC and have had a very difficult time ordering. Didn't know if you ship? Would be willing to pay extra for DNA testing.
Thanks!

Hi! I'm so sorry to hear that! I would suggest looking for breeders out that way. One might be Sweet Southern Silkies, and you can look her up on FB. I breed silkies, but I don't ship anything other than eggs. My primary service is my DNA Testing Lab :)
