Hi there,

My name is Kaitlynn and I am about 3-4 months into chicken farming. I have tried raising chicks bought from tractor supply and a local farm and have had some run ins. First I fed my chicks rocks because I did not know what proper feed to buy and I bought chick grit, so needless to say I lost my first 5 baby chicks, then my boyfriend bought me 10 babies from a local farm and I raised them to about 3-4 months and when I started letting them out of there very small cage because we wanted them to be forever free range and just nest and roost in the barn at night, out dog killed off all 10. So a year later after we lost our dog due to being hit on the road (not by us) I decided to try again. This time I bought 20 chicks from tractor supply. When they were approximately 5 or 6 weeks old I bought 10 more baby chicks to add to the clan. That night something got into my trough that I was raising them in and killed all but 4! I was terribly heartbroken and almost to the point of giving up when I went for one more try. I bought 20 more chicks and have had good luck with raising them. I have lost a couple from my puppy that I have now because she wants to not kill and eat them but play with them and ends up accidentally killing them. So after 24 chicks I know how 17 healthy, well trained, 3-4 month old chickens! My boyfriend and I are defiantly learning as we go but hopefully will continue this adventure for many years to come!

This website is awesome!!

For the most part dogs and chickens should never meet. As you know dogs + chickens = dead chickens. Since your pup already has killed chicks - it will continue to do so . Free ranging is just another way to lose them. Please visit the Learning Center to kick start your chicken education

Welcome to BYC. So sorry about the losses. Hope the new flock fares better.

Please do explore the Learning Center articles to get more prepared to succeed. Also explore the coop/run and managing your flock forums to help with improving your knowledge base.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Sorry you have had so many losses. The Learning Center has a lot of excellent articles to help members starting off, plus a lot of additional poultry articles.

Drumstick diva makes a good point about dogs...it would be best for the chickens if they were kept separate from the puppy. Maybe the dog and the birds can be outside at different times or fencing put up to keep them apart.

Good luck to you with your flock!
