I already posted a new thread this weekend, but never properly introduced myself...
My husband and I just bought his grandparent's 13 acre farm in WNC in the summer of 2017. He works full time and I tend to the land while caring for our two year old. We have big dreams but are starting out very slow. I used to work on an urban farm where we always kept laying hens. Long term I hope to raise our own meat and eggs on our farm and learn about breeding.

I received a shipment of "assorted" unsexed chicks from SandHill Preservation. They are just about 3 weeks old now and a large number of breeds. From my memory: Orpingtons (black, blue and splash), Barred Hollands, a White Crested Polish, Norwegian Jaerhon, and Black Penedesenca. When they are a little bigger I will probably post pictures for help with breed identification and figuring out who is a roo!

We also have four guineas who are about 5 months old and a chocolate lab-pit mix. Glad to be here!

Thanks for the nice intro and thanks for joining us! Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your Sandhill birds, they're known to have nice chickens (and hard to find breeds). Hope they do well for you.

Best wishes!

You do have a great plan!
If you decide to raise for meat, you will likely want to get different breeds from different places than sand hill. I have not seen big dual purpose meat breeds from them. Dels and dorkings are disappointing from sand hill
