Hello everyone,
I am new to raising chickens, we have had three for around a year. We lost two over winter, when a neighbors dog got in the garden (as our chickens have the run of the garden during the day) and have bought another two to replace them. I'm not sure of the breed of chickens we have.
I found backyardchickens in a google search, as I've got some questions and I don't really have anyone I know who knows about keeping chickens.
We have two children, 17 and 14, the 14 year old was the reason we bought chickens in the first place, but has since lost interest. My husband ,who did not want any chickens, is now their keenest advocate. I'm a teacher and my husband is an electrician. The whole family are keen surf life savers.
I also think we might have accidentally bought a cockerel rather than a chicken, when we replaced our original chickens, we have literally no idea how to tell or what to do.

G’Day from Far North Queensland Yossie :frow Welcome!

You can post some pictures on the Breed or Gender Forum for opinions.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Welcome to BYC. Cockerels will develop more pointy hackle (neck) and saddle (back) feathers, and needless to say will eventually crow. Posting pictures in the
'Gender/Breed' forum will help to answer your questions as to the sex of the bird in question.
