Hi everyone
We're a family of 5 from Australia who are raising 5x Rhode Island chicks.. they were hatched last Wednesday. So about 1.5 weeks old.
We cant have roosters in our council area but we are allowed a maximum of 6 chickens per household.

We've decided to use basic materials to build our run..

Welcome new family from Australia!
For who can give aid to Worried_Mama's chickie with a dog bite there is some basic questions that will help to share the answers of. For example how long ago did the bite occur, how is the chick acting-walking or not; eating or drinking or not; any swelling, wounds or bruising that are visible and where; or how its planned for the dog to be kept away from it to not increase the damage. I hope that helps.

Roxie was bite the afternoon of the 24th, she is mostly just hopping on one leg but can use the other just perfers not too. She is pretty sassy. She is eating and drinking, not much the fist day but as soon as I brought in Bobby she perked up and started eating and drinking more. She is pooping normal no blood. She has a puncture on her thigh and an open wound on the hinge of her leg, tendon is visible but no sign of broken bone, there is also some swelling around the hinge. There is bruising on the lower leg but it is still warm so blood flow is good. The dog is at the house out of town while the chick is in town with me to see the vet tomorrow. I also posted a thread with more detailed information.

To note also the dog was raised with chickens her whole life and never attacked them till this hatching, no idea why she suddenly attacked and not all the chicks just two, one sadly did not make it and this one we shall see, but she is sassy so I think that could help her as long as she does not get an infection.

AH very good detail on the other thread for Roxie. I am glad that its doing better the next day and lucky that there is a vet for birds in your location and that Bobby keeps her perky. Perhaps the vet will set a bandage on the lower wound or prescribe medication to prevent infection if there is inflammation. I have seen pics on here for a chick sling that holds them up to take weight off the legs but that may interfere with having Bobby for company. It would depend on the severity of the injury and if the benefits of it are more or less than Bobby. Cute names, I have a Roxie here too! He just got over some ingested toxin that made him not stand for almost a week so that was plenty of nursing.

Please do keep injured bird inside to prevent fly strike. Flies lay eggs in the wound and the resulting maggots do much more damage than the initial injury. Chickens generally have good recuperate powers IF, they don't go into shock or get infected, then need vet treatment.Hoping for a good outcome.

Update on Roxie. Her wound looks a lot better then yesterday and she was actually using her injured leg to walk a little. We saw the vet today and she said Roxie was healing well, she will have to stay inside for a week but then she can be reintegrated back into the brood. She has some pain stuff today and gets more in 48 hours, she seems a bit stoned. She also has super E, 2.5grams to 4L water and use that for drinking instead of plain water. Vet also said to use polysporine 2-3 times a day to keep the wound moist instead of dry, and to wash with Hibitane 1-2 times a day. Vet said they are still too young to know if they will be hens or roosters. I am feeling a bit better then I was yesterday as the vet said Roxie was doing well and I was doing the right things to help her.
