(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have had chickens for three years now. I am fairly new but have learned quite a bit in the last couple years. My husband and I have raised broilers with our extended family and do the processing ourselves.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently I have 3 buff orphintons , 4 Rhode island reds and 1 Rhode island red rooster (He is mean). 4 hamburgs, 1 freedom ranger, 4 mixed breed rhode island reds and hamburg and 3 roosters and one pullet hatched from the freedom ranger's eggs. Also currently in the incubator two dozen eggs from the above layers.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I know my eggs are fresh. Have you ever compared the taste between store eggs and home eggs...store eggs even taste a little bit rotten. I also love to spend time outdoors and enjoy feeding my chickens, how they follow me and their curiosity.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We also raise hogs, this spring beef cattle as well, plant a vegetable garden, have fruit trees and berry bushes - raspberry, blackberry, currents, blueberries and a small strawberry patch.
We sell some of our produce and I also can and freeze our produce
Every year we raise around 100 broiler birds. We sell most of it and keep around 40 for ourselves. I can chicken soup, chicken thighs and stock. The rest I vacuum pack and freeze.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are a family of four. Have two boys and a chihuahua that is smaller than our chickens. Our dream is one day to be able to stay home and do the farm and garden work for a living. My education and continuing education is in the social work field with a focus on the geriatric population.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have found the BYC site a year or so ago when I decided to hatch my first batch of eggs. It wasn't even chicken eggs. My dad had a Chinese goose and kept on giving me the eggs to eat. Well, I found them to be too big for my taste and after receiving around 8 of these eggs I decided to try and hatch 4 of them. They all developed and started hatching but it was my first time and I didn't realize my humidity was way off for geese eggs. All but one died. It is still alive and well, I donated it to a lady who has an enclosed pond with a bunch of other Chinese geese just like it.
I decided to join the community because I have questions and often times I see other members suggestions and questions and would like to chime in on the conversation.
I have attached a couple pictures
