Introduction

I've lived with winters all 73 years of my life, in the mid-west. Actually the last 2-3 winters have been much milder than usual. Much less snow, ice, and sub zero temps.

The main thing is to dress for the weather. Thanks to LLB & LandsEnd,& others etc. you can get winter coats, jackets, etc. that will keep you warm. Unlike states with hot, hot weather - nothing will keep you cool.

Hello everyone,

My name is Randy, my partner and I are new homesteaders since May 1, 2020. We decided to start out with chickens and other poultry in our flock. We have 12 chickens 6 black laced silver wyandottes, 6 black laced golden wyandottes, 4 heritage blue slate turkeys, and 4 Guinea hens. We started out chickens on May 9th, day old. Turkeys and guineas on June 19, day old. Have rather enjoyed the experience this far!! We can't wait to have some fresh eggs. Which from what I read will be in late fall maybe spring depending on my chickens.
We own 5 acres of land in Wisconsin, I've never raised any other animals or anything, but dogs cats and some birds and fish, but of course none for food purposes. My partner has lived here before as it was the family home. We purchased it to start a new life and become more self sufficient. It's always been a dream of mine to have a small farm or homestead. Some of our hobbies include fishing, camping, motorcycles, gardening, and hiking. Which I assume wont be doing as much, lol, still gardening though. We moved from the southwest desert to northern Wisconsin because of this whole covid thing. I'm so glad we did!! It has helped us grow more together and live a better life than we ever thought possible. So far so good. Kind of dreading winter, since winter for us was more like spring for the north. We are looking forward to enjoying meeting like minded people and to learn from y'all too. Have a great day!

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! My partner and I moved to a smaller town before the Covid thing...which turned out to be perfect timing. Our chickens should start to lay by this fall and we can't wait!
