Introduction

@LostBoi73 makes a good point about turning something you love into a job and ruining it. BUT, the flip side of that is the old saying about doing something you love means it will feel like you're never working a day in your life.

My chickens are purely for my own enjoyment, and as you've learned, they are great for that. I don't rely on my egg money, but I do sell eggs (for a ridiculously low price) because it subsidizes my crazy need to have a yard full of chickens, ducks and geese.

So, I'd say, do some research, test the waters and see what works. I think a lot of things depend on where you live. In a college town about an hour away, the breeder who provides my runner ducks sells duck eggs sell for $8 a dozen. Here, I practically have to beg people to take duck eggs because -- and I love this -- they didn't know you could eat eggs from a duck. Sometimes, I just slip a couple in with their chicken eggs when I don't feel like explaining that you can eat any egg that falls out of any bird's back end.

I'm glad to hear chickens have enriched your life. Welcome to BYC, Lily!
