Introduction

Hello, My name is Kimberly & I am new to this group.

I got my first chickens in June 2020. I got 3 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 3 Golden Comets for egg laying and we got 10 meat chickens.
I currently have 6 egg laying chickens. We harvested our meat chickens 9 weeks after we got them.
I Love the peace and relaxation I feel when I go out and work with them. I love how friendly my Golden Comets are. I Love Gardening and growing my herbs and vegetables.

I was looking to get some friendly advice on my current situation.
I have a broody hen that the other chickens attacked and plucked alot of her feathers off. It happened within 2 days. She was my bossey girl. She was definately the top hen, but she is no longer. I have removed her and placed her back in their summer coop and winterized it the best I could for now. I am going to hook up a camera and watch the others to see who is being aggressive and see about switching them to change the pecking order. Any positive advice or knowledge is appreciated. I take great care of my hens. I believe they possibly attacked her because they are probably bored. I moved them a couple weeks ago to their winter coop, which is smaller. I will try free ranging more often to help with this issue. My chickens get fresh greens, veggies, food, worms and scratch daily. Any suggestions on a winter mix or a better feed for my chickens is also welcomed.

Happy to Meet You All.

I am saying this out of kindness: Stop the treats. They don't ever NEED treats. Some scratch is FINE, but it should never exceed 10% of their diet. I am not against you, just against those that recommend treats on a daily basis and in a large amount. 10% for my flock of 23 is just over 1/2 cup and less than 1 cup. So definitely not a lot at all. Secondly, do you know if she is molting? How long has see been broody prior to not being broody (assuming she is no longer broody). What breed is she? Are you in the Northern Hemisphere?

Welcome to BYC! ❤️

:welcome :frow I had a broody once that was picked on she looked terrible. I sprayed her with Blu-Kote and put her in another coop with other birds and she was fine. She did get new feathers in. I'm lucky that I have multiple coops. You will find a lot of good information here BYCArticles.jpg Good luck with your birds and have fun...
