Hi, my name is Ginny and I am married with three children.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I think we are reasonably new compared to most. We got our first chickens a few years ago and had a lot of initial ups and downs before we were able to successfully raise a flock. Just this year we added ducks to our flock.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have six chickens and five ducks

(3) What breeds do you have?
Astralorp, Pekin, Mallard

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They have become more pets than chickens. My autistic child, who is terrified of animals, loves to be in the cage with the birds. They are the only animals she likes.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Crocheting, Cooking and Philanthropic work.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am married with three children, two cats, one dog, a few fish and a bird. We're very much a pet family. I currently work as a school bus driver.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I just found it while trying to research an issue on google. I never knew about it before and am looking forwards to having a resource to use.

Welcome to BYC!! This place is the best chicken (and ducks too) resource around! :D
The funny thing is, the ducks have come quite naturally to us, I don't even know why, but everyone else kept warning us they were dirty and frequently flew away but we haven't had issues with that at all! Thank you for the lovely response!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

This is the place to be when you keep poultry! If you have any questions about anything along the way, be sure to ask.

Welcome to our community!
Thank you so much! I only wish I had found this resource sooner, I think it might have slowed the roller coaster down a bit. We lost a lot of chicks our first year, out of ten girls only three survived. Since then we have been blessed with two roosters and a dog and the predator issue has stopped. I can't wait to learn so much more and hopefully someday contribute some answers!

Oh I am so sorry for your losses! :hugs I had issues too my first year with keeping chickens, BYC is so loaded with info and helpful people, its a "must" when we keep birds! 😊

Thank you. I think our only recent losses were far out of our control. We lost the chick today that got pushes out of the nest but on reflection it looks like she may have been developing wrong or she was just pushed out by an inexperienced hen. The other one somehow got out of their zone, and we think the dog may have gotten her. He's a good dog and does great with predators but when the chickens get out, he tries to catch them and obviously isn't gentle. The only other loss we had; we think a weasel got her while the dog was sleeping. Definitely not the more horrifying losses that I knew were from my own inexperience.
