Hi everyone,

I am a new member, Richard, and I line in Atlanta GA. I first got my chickens as juveniles in September of 2024 and so I am new to the chicken life.

We have started with 4: 2 easter eggers, an olive egger and a silver death layer. They're not laying eggs yet, they are all approx. 5 months old so I think we are close.

One has developed a weird problem where the bird's head appears to be recessed into the body and the left side looks like its forward across the chest, almost like the chicken is shrugging one shoulder and hiding behind it. I have not been able to find anything online to help me diagnose the issue, but in looking I found this site and decided to join in the fun.

I am enjoying seeing the birds become used to me, even excited to see me, they follow me around but still don't like to be handled.

Other than chickens we also have 2 bee hives, 2 dogs and 6 cats. My wife and our 2 teenage daughters enjoy the chickens a lot.

If anyone has an idea what the issue might be with the one I described above let me know. She is eating and seems fine but looks very odd.

Happy new year all

You've come to the right place to get answers. This is nice place with so many knowledgable members. Those girls will surely be laying soon. As far as them letting you handle them, I make a point of touching each one of my six chickens at least once a day. Have yours begun to crouch down when you try to pet them? The crouch is a sign that they are getting ready to start giving you eggs. It is that crouching time that I get my best handling in.
