(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? - I am kind of new. I was introduced to them this year around January. I have fallen in love with this species!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? - I have about 4 hens, 2 pullets, and like 8 roos (I'm working on it lol) plus whatever my meat chickens.
(3) What breeds do you have? - I have a Partridge silkie roo, a buff Orpington hen, a mix of chocolate/black Orpington hen, two rhode island red roos, a golden pheonix roo, and a bunch of barnyard mixes.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? - I love em, my favorite part is probably watching Mama's raise chicks
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? - I like dog sports, showing chickens, horseback riding, drawing, and lots more
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. - I am a highschool student in FFA. All of my chickens reside at my school and I help care for them. I mainly joined this to actually answer some of my questions.
Questions:
1. What are some hatcheries known for in standard chickens? I'm looking for new show prospects so I'm hoping to get chicks near February and need to know places that can assure that I get up to standard/show quality chicks I can raise.
2. Any tips on poultry showing?
3. Is Meyers hatchery reliable for show quality/ up to standard chickens?
4. Any tips on getting chickens used to being handled for showing?
5. Any breed recommendations? I'm currently showing a golden laced wyandotte and a barred Plymouth rock this year. I like breeds that are fluffy(Cochin, silkie, polish), have penciling(Brahma, wyandotte), lacing(wyandotte, polish). Although I am not picky, and might prefer normally feathered chickens for showing (No feathered feet or shanks, and actually feathers instead of fluff.) I also love speckled Sussex, but sadly I can't find many who breed to standard for them.
