and Welcome to Backyard Chickens.
to have you here with us. Enjoy your time here at BYC!
I feed all organic, non GMO, feed. I do supplement with ground eggshells in their feed plus oyster shell in the coop for them to consume as needed. I also add an herb mixture to their feed (about 2 tsp) all herbs that I grow and dry. I read that the egg shells are quick release calcium and the oyster shell extended release. I do give treats but healthy. We are very responsible owners.Welcome to BYC! I also am very sorry for your loss. I hear you saying you want to learn how to prevent this from happening in the future., what feed do you use and are you giving a calcium supplement like crushed oyster shell on the side?
I use calcium gluconate for an egg bound duck, but for a chicken, I give a calcium citrate with D3 tablet . I think there’s an article about it in the learning center here…

10x10 run, not coop.I do have the extra oyster shell dish in the coop, plus grit for the winter. I really like just being organic, not wanting to give all of the manufactured supplements. I believe in God’s remedy. I try to be as holistic a possible.I live in the country, have a garden in the summer and just want my chickens to be happy and healthy.
The last couple days have been mild in Michigan and been able to let them get out and stretch their legs more than in their 10x10 coop. But now I’m down to 9.![]()
Sometimes we do everything right and yet a bird has a disorder , perhaps weakness or problems that is genetic, and there is nothing we can do to fix it. Again I’m so sorry for your loss.I do have the extra oyster shell dish in the coop, plus grit for the winter. I really like just being organic, not wanting to give all of the manufactured supplements. I believe in God’s remedy. I try to be as holistic a possible.I live in the country, have a garden in the summer and just want my chickens to be happy and healthy.
