Intrusive rooster!

Thanks Lazy Gardener! I didn't think about catching him. He's gotten a little slow since the last attack, so I should be able to catch him if I ever see him come back. Perhaps presenting him to the neighbor with shorter wing feathers will get my neighbor to keep the rooster in check. If not, then I think just allowing my dogs to take care of the rooster instead of intervening, like I have been, will be my only option. I shouldn't have to care for someone else's animals and have to be careful about letting my dogs out in my own backyard.

No, it's not your job to protect him in your yard. Sad to have to let it come to this, and my greater concern might be if your dogs enjoy doing the deed too much, and then look to your own flock to provide the same entertainment. But, you know your dogs, and know if that is likely to ever become an issue.

We have spoken to them and the neighbors behind them have complained. They don't know that my dog attacked the rooster. They thought it was fox (we have foxes in the area).

If they think a fox is responsible for his eventual demise, all the better.

Exactly! I wouldn't even "present him" with the rooster if you clip his wings. Just clip the wings and send him on his way.

I grew up on a farm and it was a common saying that once a dog tasted the blood of a chicken that they could never be trusted, so I'd be reluctant to rely on your dogs too much for fear that they'd discover how much fun it is to catch and eat chickens. to a bird dog, chickens are the ultimate chew toy.

I like the idea of clipping the wings of the rooster. at this point, if the neighbor can not control his animals, it's fair game to catch and clip, IMHO. if the owner gets his feathers up in a bunch then just tell him that you were worried that your dogs were going to kill the rooster and that you did it for his own good.

I really need advice on this!

I live on half an acre and I have a neighbor that allows their rooster and hens to roam around the neighborhood, that includes my back yard . I have one hen and 9 six-week-old chicks and one of my chicks looks like it may be a cockerel. I always come home to find that rooster in my yard with my hen and he has successfully mated with her before (we have one chick as proof) and has even gotten her to follow him out of our yard (I don't want her to be road kill!). I'm afraid that the rooster will try to kill my little cockerel since the rooster seems to have claimed my hen and back yard. Also, I have 2 dogs and they don't bother my chickens, HOWEVER the dogs have attempted to attack the rooster and his ladies that come into the yard whenever they're stupid enough to come over when I have the dogs out. One of the dogs has already killed a rooster that came into our yard from the same neighbors, and the other dog has attacked the current rooster TWICE. Most recent attack was this morning. I thought that the first attack would keep the rooster away but apparently not. If this continues I'm sure that I will be finding a dead rooster in my yard pretty soon. My neighbor doesn't seem to care about the welfare of their chickens since they lay their eggs all over the place and I have found dead chickens on the side of the road before. What can I do??? Please help!

If you are not having success by conversing over matter with neighbor then look into your state and county legal codes on livestock. Many rules on wayward livestock can involve you being able to confined the wayward animals and reporting the possession to officials. Then you can be reimbursed for cost of care for that time. See if state will allow you to assume ownership if bird not claimed within a certain amount of time. Clipping birds wings might fall under category of damaging the animal which in some situations might put you in a legal bind,
