Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

X2 on not crossing !!!

Kari do you have any pics of the adult phase of the wild gene?

I am very interested in how all of the different genes are expressed in the adults.

I am fixating on the need for SP roosters, and knowing what the different hens will produce.
Not really adult because this is the first generation I have had them. I guess I just got lucky with my choice of flock sire

The boy on the right is e+/e+ Pg/pg+, S/S - 1 dose of pattern gene gives him the spangles instead of lacing.

two pullets on the right (1 in fore ground and 1 behind her).

This one show the darkest red and more defined lacing of the two.

I'll try to get more pictures today while the sun is shining!

I know these are not part of the proposed standard, but they have all the type and are beautiful! I plan to keep them going.

I believe we are mostly dealing with dominant Autosomal Red (Ar+) which is linked to the Duckwing (wild type) coloration, e+. Silver (S) is incompletely dominant over gold(s+).

These pullets bred to a Silver SP male would probably have the red.

Okay, I will have to do some more reading on the red genes genetics.

In people, cattle and others the red is a recessive.

But, your flock is very good looking so you obviously know what you are doing.

Kari- What would be your guess on the genetic combination on the pullets? I think you're right on with the male having only one Pg gene. Do you think the pullets have a single dose of Pg or not?

P.S. I should have some pics up here before too long. :)

My guess would be that the e+ worked it's way into the breeding as a hidden ressesive in the leghorn that was added via Ideal. What are your thoughts on that Kari?

Has anyone seen this pattern appear out of Sandhill birds? My guess would be not considering the breeds he introduced to the Iowa Blue (Campine, Fayoumi, & SP Rock). None of those have e+ genes in their make-up.

I disagree Curt, I think it was present in the original Iowa Blues. These yellow chicks look like pheasant chicks from the foundation stock stories. There is a way to supress the red to make Silver Duckwing.
The pictures jsut posted by Spartacus are from Sandhill so they are getting the yellow chicks too.

Those yellow chicks from Spartacus appear to be developing like the darker colored chicks without a red/tan colored breast on those that appear to be pullets. Comments by Kent Whealy and Ransom Bolson also mentioned that the pheasant looking ones developed into the same colored bird as the darker chicks.

I thought a Silver Duckwing female had a red/salmon breast and that the way to suppress it (within our silver penciled variety) was to have two Pg genes?

Well, now after I just posted that, I got to thinking that the picture of WC Fenton appears to have a very light colored hen.......she's described in the article as being mostly white on the front half of the body. Can you shed some light Kari on what genes may have allowed a possible e+ bird while at the same time removing the salmon breast to solid white?

On the other hand, do we have any accounts of those who use to raise the original Iowa Blue that experienced any salmon breasted hens? I don't recall, but maybe I missed something. Most accounts were familiar with the "pheasant" looking chicks, but none to my knowledge commented that those birds developed the salmon on the breast.

They are beautiful birds though, and I'm glad Kari is keeping them as a separate line. I'm expecting that when we breed Silver to Silver out of Kari's line that we will end up with some e+ chicks out of the cross. If her rooster is E e+, then the only way the eb (from the hens) could show, is if the chick recieved an e+ from the rooster. That would make all of the Silver Penciled chicks split as eb e+. The eb is dominant and therefore would express. My suspision would be that each of my silver chicks would have an e+ as one of their genes and when bred together this would crop up.............time will tell........ :)

What are your thoughts on that Kari?
