Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

I'll have to review my book to get the details right, but Silver Duckwing hens are supposed to have a salmon breast and males should not. You have to have two lines to produce the correct color hen and cock. Spartacus' yellow chick is male, so it may not show any red. Mine does not.

They are beautiful birds though, and I'm glad Kari is keeping them as a separate line. I'm expecting that when we breed Silver to Silver out of Kari's line that we will end up with some e+ chicks out of the cross. If her rooster is E e+, then the only way the eb (from the hens) could show, is if the chick recieved an e+ from the rooster. That would make all of the Silver Penciled chicks split as eb e+. The eb is dominant and therefore would express. My suspision would be that each of my silver chicks would have an e+ as one of their genes and when bred together this would crop up.............time will tell........ :)

What are your thoughts on that Kari?

I think this is probably the case as well. We haven't seen the last of them.

To WWDan and Mr. Heinz: This breed was almost lost. It's just recovering. I hope everyone will let them repopulate from the existing individuals without trying to rush the process by crossing with other breeds. Just my opinion of course. Do what anyone wants with their own stock..Good luck and best wishes either way.
Mr. Matthews
I know little about this breed because most of it has been lost. I signed on to help restore the breed to a useful dual purpose fowl. I don't know very much about the breed but what I do know I am learning primarily from people on this thread, whom I find to be some of the most genuine folks I've ever had the pleasure of knowing through BYC. You played your morality card on me Sir, and I would suggest you study up on the breed and join the club before doing so in the future so that you have some inkling of what your are talking about. Sorry, this is not as tactful and diplomatic as Kari's reply; she's a diplomat and a true ambassador for the breed and I'm just a dumb hillbilly farmer. Join up and help us with this monumental project.

I wouldn't take it personally Dan, Mr Mathews is full of random advice like this. I reviewed his posts and this is what he does - jumps in and fires off a comment he intends to be helpful. His heart is in the right place but I don't see evidence he knows anything about Iowa Blues. If he wants to learn he has come to the right place, but I don't think that is his goal here.

Kari- You are right about this. I totally forgot about the double mating that is required to get the "right" color in silver duckwing.

I really think having these show up in my flock was pure accident, but I don't think it's a bad thing. I think they will be useful down the road and I'm anxious for my pullets to start laying!
When I started down this path in 2010 I never expected it to turn out like it has. I thought Iowa Blues were the ugliest birds in my flock when I picked them up from Eric. If it wasn't for the crosses i did with them in the beginning I would not have found any redeeming qualities. I finally saw improvement last year and the ones I'm hatching this year are truly beautiful! Now I understand why they were so popular years ago. I'm eternally grateful to all those folks pushing to help recover this breed and spreading them across the US. I lost most of my flock once and learned the only way to truly protect them is get them out there. Now I know if something happens to my flock I have people to help me restock :)

Not taking it personally at all Kari. Just telling the man to teach me what he knows or come along and learn from the great folks on this forum. You never know if it's someone who is jumping around threads and firing from the hip, or if you're dealing with a liquid loudmouth. I just thought I might flush him out with a comment. Generally though, I don't waste my time.
