Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Hi Curt

I was on the road most of the day yesterday, and in bed at 8,

I have ONE Iowa Blue chick from Kari's eggs, and one pipped but didnt make it out, I am slowly hydrating and helping an Icelandic still in the hatcher, its the last survivor, 7 chicks out of 41 incubated. I am crediting the power outage, these that survived are real surv ivors.

The IB chick is a beautiful silver penciled black already ! A beauty.

REF the hatchery in NY, he is full of BS, the mention of attorneys is proof, any attorney would say out up front and bluntly that what he is saying is impossible to enforce or demand. You canNOT patent DNA, the SCOTUS just ruled, again, on that.

I would avoid this character like the poison he is.

There was a guy name of Perry Green that did essentially the same thing with a dog sled breed, the one that went to Antartica with Cmdr Perry, I knew one of his drivers, Norm Vaughn, who also entered the Iditarod at age 84. Great guy. Anyhow, Green put all kinds of restrictions on including forbidding dogs used for stud, and he wouldnot sell females, so he tried to control all of the DNA of the Chinook breed. It almost died out, but, when he died a literal handful of owners did rescue the breed. Unfortunately only a tiny proportion are mushers, most just pet owners. But the breed does exist.

You gave the exact right answers to this guy Curt, exactly right. Let him hang onto his collection of unknowns. My bet is that his birds are nowheres near as pure as he alleges. The whole thing stinks to me. The onus is on him to prove his birds are what he says, and to me the only proof that he could offer is DNA tests by two reputable labs, of our choosing. Otherwise, consider him a con artist. And not a very bright one at that.

A couple breeders of import Horse breeds, two that I know of are doing the same thing, the Irish Traveler, used in years gone by by the literal Irish travelers are doing this now, its also known as the Irish Cobb. They are making real big bucks on people who are suckering in to the sales pitch. So the profiteers are dooming the breed in the US to make their bucks, but it will never be well known because of the prices being had.

The folks right here on this thread are the ones that have credibility with me. All others are out of the loop until they prove their bona fides. Join the breed club, and work within it.

Enjoy all.

Honestly, that's my suspicion, but we'll see where this leads to.

Sorry to hear about your hatch Jake! At least it's silver penciled!!!!! :)

everything has to go through his attorneys
Yes, that did it for me. Looking for his fifteen minutes of fame in "chicken world"? Get real.

And the limited release thing? It's not like we're talking about the next big fad, that he's going to make a killing selling them.

My opinion would be he has nothing. If he were truly interested in protecting the breed, he would be singing it's praises and wanting to share with other dedicated people.

Well I don't think he wants to make money off of them as he only hatches a set number of chicks each year and sells chicks to only a small group of people each year. He's not expanding his flock and isn't particulary interested in doing so. I'm suspicious, but will give the benefit of the doubt. I don't plan on purchasing stock until his line would become verified.

Ok, so I am now satisfied that his flock is not a pure strain devoid of outcrossing, based upon information gathered from his website that I didn't catch before. We'll see if Alison is able to establish a varification or not for this flock. She will continue to persue this for us. Back to the hunt! :)

Thanks everyone for your help and the great discussion!!!! We have an amazing group of people here.

I'm not getting my hopes up too far as I was given these same assurances from Ideal, that the birds were absolutely pure, collected from remnant flocks, the history of the flocks could not be shared with me, no pictures could be given, but I was assured they were exactly what I was looking for...........and we can see how that turned out...................

Yeah, exactly.

Your honor, I object! It is devastating to my case!

Even if the flock is pure, by hoarding he's dooming the breed to yet another dangerous bottleneck, loss of genetic diversity, and eventually extinction.

Stay your course Curt, you are right on !

Contrast him to Greenfield Farms, they import, market well, and price accordingly, but he is checkable, and making some valuable introductions. There is a world of difference between them. This twit is on an ego trip,, let him do his own thing, if, he was real he'd be way up front cooperating with the breed club. Just curious, what was it on the website that tipped you off? Any kind of power grab of genes is a red flag to me. With a steam whistle.

The up news is that I have a 2nd Iowa Blue hatchling from Karis' eggs, and another one pipping !

These are at least 3 days delayed from the power outage, I have several others hatched and/or pipping now, all are very slow in pipping, and I have and am helping several, mostly in a bit of chipping, and then wetting the exposed membrane. I moved the eggs to the hatcher last sat, and was looking for pipping Monday/Tuesday, nothing til late Wed, so, if you have a power outage give them time to recover and catch up. The jury is still out but it looks like less then 25% will hatch. But thats that many more then I was expecting to have.

Life goes on.

The picture on The Poultry Hatchery website is the same as what you get from the rest of the hatcheries. Autosomal Red, Squirrel tail, shallow chest. Even if they are pure they need to be "fixed". That bird doesn't look anything like the Ransom birds.

Hello! I bought 4 "Javas" from Ideal in February. Turns out they aren't Javas but something else. Someone mentioned that they might be Iowa Blues. It's ok with me if they are. We love our girls! They are so friendly and sweet and beautiful.

Here's a pic of one of them. Ill have to get a pic of the other 2, as they are a bit differently colored (one passed away). Is this an Iowa Blue pullet?
