Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Huh, typed a reply and it must have "poofed".

Short version now...

I'm home! Long day, got home around 10:30pm. Great fun, great seeing everyone.

I compiled the show results (see below) if anyone is interested, though as Kari said, don't think it means much this early in the game, but was fun watching the judging happening and at least the first judge was quite talkative about his thoughts as he went through, which was great. I didn't get a couple of the numbers on your birds, Kari, but if you want them added in below just let me know. :)

Our trial run is in the books and I think it went well!

Next up, some fall shows! Looking forward to some big entries at the North Iowa Poultry Show in Mason City, IA in September and the Eastern Iowa Poultry Association show, in November, I believe. Having difficulty finding websites/info on either at the moment, but I'm beat, will look more later.

I sat out and watched my birds for quite a while this morning. Now that I have caught the show fever, I'm going to try to train my eye to pick them early. I think I have some nice prospects in the baby pen

I also moved my IaB/SPPR crosses into the Duckwing pen. I plan to put them into pen with an SP Iowa Blue, but all I have available are two young now. The offspring will be eb/e+ but that's OK. That won't hurt my duckwing project any

I would really like to call them something besides Duckwing. Any ideas?

Agreed, they're much prettier than the name "duckwing" implies. :)

To help with the show fever, here's a list of IA/IL/MN/WI shows put together from some sites. The red are the ones we're trying for some good entries for. Just wanted to put the info out there in case anyone else is wanting to show. It's addicting!

I'm planning for at least the 2 red highlighted IA shows and probably the big Wisconsin International Poultry Club show in September.

By the way, creating a showing section for the website...did anyone get any good photos at the show? I'd love it if you would email me what you have so I can add some photos!

This is the only picture I have to offer. Right now I'm at State Fair and a guy with an exotic bird display asked if I'd like the eggs his green winged scarlett macaw is laying. He's away from home and didn't want to see them go to waste.
Yesterday was the first, he said she should lay another tonight!

They are the size of a large bantam egg. I am SO excited to try and incubate these!

Wow !!

What a gift !!

Good luck with it. They take baby feeding, but are worth it.

It is looking like an excellent chance for showing/exhibiting IBs this year in the Plains States, I hope we can do something next year here in MI.

Congratulations to all who participated and to Kari and Connie on their placements. I truly believe you guys will make this show a launching pad for the Iowa Blue breed. Raise a glass in a toast to the future. Everyone should be very proud of the club's accomplishments. This is generally the only thread I visit on BYC on a regular basis. There is always something new, something to learn, there is enthusiasm, energy, new members signing up, you guys rock! I'm happy and honored to be associated with you and this great breed.

Yes, also add in Curt, Connie, Kari and Curt are the movers in this breed, and I am very happy to be with them.

My incubating has been very disappointing this year, but I have some beautiful SP youngsters from Kari to treasure and to grow out. They are very docile, I used one to 'mentor' some new hatches and she did a great job. She is now in the outside brooder and growing fast.

I am going to rehome my Delawares, I enjoy them but I want to do justice to my Iowa Blues and Icelandics, with just two breeds I can keep more backup roosters and just generally do a better job with them. I am hoping to have all broody hatching next year, but, just in case am going to replace the incubators/hatcher. Especially the Brower I used for a hatcher, as far as I am concerned it is garbage.

I am going to get several digital thermometers and check the hovabator on a cycle. And will be looking for another one, not sure yet of the brand/make.

Life goes on, I look forward to checking in here every day, always more to learn,
its a great place to be.
