Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

LL

So I was doing a little searching this evening on the review part of BYC and found this picture on one of the reviews for Iowa Blue. The post doesn't say where she got the bird, but notice the lacing? Either we can add him to the list of Charcoal IB's or he's a Birchen with the gene for lacing... ideas?

I always seem to come up with more questions, sorry guys!
So far I have only seen try lacing on Birchen males, so likely that is what he is especially if he came from a hatchery. From this picture it doesn't look like he has a single comb though, so I wonder what he really is.

That's what I thought as well with his comb, but she had another picture of him showing a single comb with 6 well defined points. Try lacing is a new one on me. Guess you learn sosomething new every day!

I candled my eggs and have 28 little embryos

Hopefully I'll be able to report on chicks this time next week!
That's a really good fertility percentage for this being your first batch of the year! I'm not holding out for near that many, considering I starting cramming eggs in the 'bator as soon as the pullets started laying. You should see me staring at the incubators when I'm in the hatching room

I got my first Ameraucana egg after their molt today. I squealed when I saw it and made the IB girls sitting in the nesting boxes squawk

Oh, well that number is a little skewed because it includes 2 clutches. The first set is 11 out of 39, but the second is 17/24 so that's better.

Oh I see. I candled today and I have 7/26 at 10 days, so I tossed the infertile and set another 18. We'll see :).
Finals are over thank the Lord so now I can go back to my chicken obsession.

Who can tell me what variety this hen best represents? She is from Sandhill, about 3 years ago.

I know Eric and I already talked about this hen, but thought I'd comment here for everyone else to mull over. I am of the opinion that this hen is based on ER-Fay. The Birchen locus (ER) technically has two different versions. ER - which is a basic birchen and then ER-Fay which is the birchen base Fayoumi chickens are built on. When Fayoumis are crossed their birchen base tends to deposit heavy melanization in isolated places. The most common is the head, but also the lower back of neck as well as on wing shoulders.

This hen looks quite similar to the Charcoal hens (which are technically based on ER with various modifiers which make them look like a pattern that sits between a Birchen and Silver), the difference between our Charcoals and this hen is that Charcoals are built on ER and this hen appears to be based on ER-Fay.

Denny is planning on running a couple of pullets like this under a Silver cockbird. I'll be curious to see how this will turn out, although I'm skeptical whether this will produce anything of value for him. Time will tell, and hopefully he'll have a couple hatched out and grown the next time I get to his place. Personally I'm of the mindset that pullets like this shouldn't be used in the breeding pens as they are built on a locus base that is undesirable in our birds. Namely, the ER-Fay.

What are the thoughts of others concerning this hen?
