Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Here are some 4 1/2 month old cockerels in the scraggly stage. I do have a few that are looking as if they will be large. Their legs are very stout and they are of good size for their age. I'll give a plug for Kari because these are all from her stock. I have two cockerels which appear to be smokeys (as well as two pullets) and the rest are either charcoal or silver - who knows for sure. I'm happy with the growth rate and size at this point. The pullets, aside from the two smokeys are typical for what we called silver pencil and are of excellent size for their age. The two smokey pullets were large as chicks but are a bit less mature than the others.

That is quite a variety of color there! You have some good choices. I have a bunch in that awkward stage myself

They do get prettier though!

Sorry for going MIA guys! I haven't had access to a computer in quite a while. Eric, yes, I am planning on attending the September show in Mason City. However, I won't be showing. With my college classes starting this week, I simply won't have time.

On top of that, I've been exponentially downsizing my flock the past month so that responsibility wouldn't be so cumbersome when school starts up again. I still need to rehome a couple trios and quite a few chicks, but I'm going in the right direction. At least I haven't acquired any!!!

very minimal stripe markings on the back of this smokey baby (from smokey cockerel & birchen hen):

Anyways, this is a very interesting looking Smokey chick. I'm excited to see how it looks as it grows

I crossed an IB cock over my AM pullets before I got rid of them so I could have some Iowacaunas of my own. It's probably one of things I needed the least but oh well

Hope all is going well in everyone's flocks!!!

Here's a couple that I hatched from some of Kari's eggs last year and posted on this thread at that time. Similar to what you're seeing in your little chick. The pullet developed mostly like a Silver only much lighter in coloration and the male ended up with what appeared to be normal markings. They were about half grown when I moved them on.

That makes me feel better :) we also got a couple "silver" patterned chicks that are cocoa or brown tone...we can post pictures later of them ...Rollo over Sweetie, Betty and Boop produced very different results! With Gandalf we got large numbers of Smokeys...with Rollo who is a whiter smokey male we got lots of brown chicks :)
