Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Thought I would share.

I really like the way this guy is turning out. He is becoming protective of his hens at around 5 months, and just developing a personality. A silver.
He also must attack this guy about every other day.

He is backup. I feel I could have made a better choice, but wanted to keep a charcoal for some reason.

The best hen. A silver.

As you can see I have some AR to deal with. Down to 5 hens out of 14. Some predator loss, but more to coccodiosis. It has been a learning experience. Had chickens about 6 years, but havent raised chicks for a long time. Not ever in this quantity.

6 more hens are on the way.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. I must say I was shocked by all the green grass, This is what my chickens have to forage, Five years of drought. I shouldn't complain, at least its not charred.

Our broody Iowa hatched two babies last Tuesday. JB is the dad, not sure which hens these are from, think they both are charcoals?

and .....eight out of the eight developing Iowa eggs from @IowaBlueCurt hatched yesterday with the last this morning :) Here are seven of them, the last to hatch is dark and was under the brooder plate :). Ok Curt, what do you think? Only one of the nine was clear. What do you think of the patterns from this "Jamaca" line?

Candy,

Time for an update on your new chicks. How are they doing?

@trailrider330 Here are the updated chick pics:

Here the close up of the two hatched by the Iowa broody.

Now all ten of the chicks together :)

Nice to see all the pictures! Time for me to do some downsizing. Frustrated with the males though, Just can't seem to find a "perfect" specimen without at least one flaw. I guess I can afford to be ruthless, since I'll be raising a bunch of chicks over the winter. Thought I had a buyer, but they changed their mind after I set the hatch.

They're looking really good Candy! Can't wait to see them mature a little more so you can tell the pullets from the cockerels.

Been remodeling my coop to get ready for some new chicks from you this coming spring. Just got a good coat of Blackjack #57 down on the floor within the last 24 hours and hope to tackle the roof in the coming week.

I like the left cockerel best, then the right one. Just my unsolicited two cents worth.

LIkely I will keep the one on the left. I have others better than the rest in the photos. I have quite a few with way too much white, but that does diminish as they mature. At this age even a month makes a huge difference in maturity so I have to wait to cull. I have about 40 that need to go. Also thinning out off-color pullets, birchen, charcoal, smokey. Terrific type, just not the right color.

Does anyone know what happened to all the Iowa Blue pictures on the IBCC website? It seems like they took down everything but the silvers, but even the silvers aren't showing up consistently. Does this have something to do with petitioning the APA for SOP acceptance?
