Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Ok, question. Here is Cocoa who started a dark all brown. The waddles and comb are not half as developed as Wing nut (their pics are on the last page), who is clearly a boy. Would you say Cocoa is a pullet or cockerel at this 7 week old picture taken over the weekend? The bird has pretty thick legs but very little in comb and nothing showing for waddles yet.

Thought I would share pictures of my new IB flock from Candy and Brett.

I'm anxious to see how they mature.

Hoping to continue learning more about this breed, make some friends, start raising my own IBs, and work to advance the breed.

Next on the "to do" list, join IBCC!!!

Had my 2 month old pullets out for a bit with my main flock this morning. I'm kinda thinking that my two Iowa's are going to be their main tormentors when I do get brave and toss em in all together on a permanent basis. Does anybody else have that issue with their mix flock??

We don't. The only bullies we have in our flock are/were the red sex links. When they all free range together, the Iowa ladies just stay to themselves.

The others just do normal pecking order stuff when newbs get introduced (of same breed)... We have our smoky Iowas and mixed Iowas in with the EE's. Never saw any of them being bullys to date. They are probably wanting to make sure the newbs don't take any pecking order status away.

We also have roosters, that may make a difference too.

we are really looking forward to seeing the pics of them feathering in...it is really amazing that they start out so many different tones and colors. Just to end up varying shades of black/gray pencilling :)

didn't see it so much tonight. Maybe they're not as mean as I thought they was. Think I'm going to put them in with the big girls Thursday night when I get back from seeing Civil War and have them in with the big girls full time. They're old enough to do that. Just need to add a extra roost for them to spread out on them.

Well, you never know :) It helps when they are old enough to defend themselves at least. Our Iowa's will throw a "head" type peck to another breed at times or the youngsters we integrate, but never see any contact or any blood thank goodness. Good Luck and keep an eye out :)
