Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Thank you. We have two others that look a lot like him but have gold feathers where his are silver. I'm guessing they are crosses of some sort.

I would suggest to not breed the one with gold if he is an Iowa as he will throw AR (autosomal red) into the mix of chicks and that is almost impossible to breed out once you introduce it. The white and black cockerel could be an Iowa Blue, hard to tell but the black legs point to him being a "birchen" variety. There are four varieties of IA, silver, smokey, birchen, and charcoal.

Is there a good place where I can see pictures of the various types? The gold ones aren't being bred, they will end up going in the freezer most likely.

If he is a birchen blue, then do I just need to find birchen blue hens to breed him to? I'm assuming you don't typically interbreed the various color types.

No because birchen is dominant and you will only get birchen. Assuming he is actually an Iowa I would use a silver hen only. I believe the president of our club,Kari, started with the birchen variety and did get some other colors at times however I think she started with hatchery stock where its anyones guess what may be lurking in the genetics. Kari has refined her flock greatly.
