Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Pretty rooster

I have some questions about some smokey hens and AR. First is a hen that's clean, no AR.

Now a smokey hen with some AR.

So, which hen is better? I feel these birds need some red in their back to get that mossy dark grey look. If all you have is white and black it looks blotchy and not smooth.

I am sorry if we are one of the ones that responded with pricing and you never heard back after you discussed sending a payment? We sell chicks and hatching eggs to states that do not require AI certification. We are NPIP, but not AI. It is so costly here in Michigan to pay for these tests that NPIP is all we can go for at this time. We are a small farm developing the Iowa Blue breed according to the historic coloring of Charcoal. We have our own line of Iowa Blues, the Fivewire Farm line.

We do sell hatching eggs. It is too hot to send any however. Usually hatching eggs are sold before it gets too hot. They could sit in a boiling hot truck and trying to hatch shipped eggs is difficult to begin with. However, we do sell Iowa Blue hatching eggs and also live chicks. What state do you live in? We can check if we can ship some to you in the future.

I was trying to get them all hatched out about the same time so less fighting and no stressful introduction if they all grow up together. If I wait 2 months everyone will be half grown my only hope would be someone goes broody.
Someone said they had 12 eggs and are going to send an invoice we shall see.

just hatched this Iowa chick...silver or smokey? trying to be both???

Did you ever get your Iowa eggs?

Where is the best place to get some quality “stock” to start a flock up. Have had chickens most of my life and was thinking about getting a few again. Was considering either Iowa Blues or buckeys

Hi there,

Well? I guess all Iowa breeders currently have "quality" stock. The issue is knowing what color you wish to have? The Silver or Charcoal are the best representative flocks at this time. I was the VP of the Iowa Blue CHicken club. Many of the breeders have lost stock, but we have and are breeding for Charcoal. If you are interested in stock, please PM me with your questions! Iowa's are wonderful and we are thankful to have a viable flock with personality.
