Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

Bruce, your hens have nice, full bodies, lovely round heads and are very pretty too! It looks like you'll need to watch the tail angles on some of them too, though.

Draye, your hen looks like a couple of charcoals I hatched. They hatch out with very dark down.

So glad some one commented on her. She hatched out almost a chocolate color.
I'm not really claiming her as an Iowa Blue though. Her daddy was my Salmon colored Naked Neck rooster. Her mother was a Naked Neck that my brother has breed. She (the mother) was a Birchen colored that had an Iowa Blue daddy and was out if a black Naked Neck hen.

Now the reason that this hen turned out not Naked Neck was because my rooster and the mother both only carried one copy if the NN gene. So only 1/4 of their babies would have turned out with the naked neck.

I just thought I'd get opinions on her because I thought she looked so much like an Iowa Blue hen to me.

Is she even a color that the Blues group agreed on?

Happy Holidays! The next generation! Silver chicks out of Diesel and 7 silver pullets.

Diesel has now taken up residence in southern Illinois with a lovely family who look likely to spoil him.

I dropped a note into this thread a few weeks ago trying to find a home for three IB chicks that were included with my order from Sand Hill. I never found a taker and now I'm quite taken with them for their personality. I've decided to grow them out, and see what happens. I think all three are female. These girls are always underfoot and run to the fence when I pass by. I've never made any attempt to tame them down but yesterday I offered some scratch in my hand, and they didn't hesitate. Is this typical? I keep reading how the breed is a little flighty but these are some of the most confident chicks I've owned. I tried to take a picture, but of course they wanted to stand between my feet.
Birchen?

Charcoal or Silver?

Can click on photos to enlarge.

The one on the left is a Dorking.
These chicks are 10 weeks old now.
Happy New Year.

Our Iowa girls are all friendly and smart! The latest hatch all are sweethearts especially the smokey gals. The silvers and charcoals are next friendly and our birchens have shown more "flightiness" of them all. I am glad you are enjoying them :)

Sad to say I won't be able to make that show. I work the 29th all day

Eric, I am willing to provide some chicks provided they want them in the spring. hkw many do they need?

I need to get in touch with Tony again but I think he is looking for 12 to 15 chicks. And I am not sure when. I will also be donating some chicks to Sibley Park in Mankato, MN. They have a petting zoo and I am looking forward to donating chicks. It's a great Park and protected zoo area for farm animals. They are very well pampered!
